The Apple Watch Action Button’s sole purpose is to do your bidding

Buttons and smartwatches belong together. | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge For me, the worst part about running in cold weather isn’t the freezing wind, black ice, or the fact that my face feels like it’s been stabbed with one thousand needles. It’s the 10 seconds spent shivering as my icicle fingers navigate through menus to launch an Apple Watch workout. Ten seconds isn’t much, but it’s enough for the cold to seep into your bones because you’re not moving. That’s why I was stoked for the Apple Watch Ultra and one of its key new features: the Action Button. The Action Button is a programmable physical button that’s exclusive to the Ultra. Unlike the digital crown or side button, it isn’t hard-coded to do any one thing. Instead, you can program it to do anything you want. Sort of. Apple placed the button on... SpaceX accused of age discrimination by former employee

General view of SpaceX headquarters on August 03, 2020 in Los Angeles, California. | Photo by AaronP/Bauer-Griffin/GC Images A former SpaceX engineer published an essay today describing alleged age discrimination he says he experienced while he was at the company. “I saw my work roles gradually transferred to younger engineers who fit the company’s ‘frat bro’ mold,” John Johnson writes in the essay published on the platform Lioness . “In the culture, in the environment of SpaceX, old people are rare. And when I say old people, I mean anyone over 40,” Johnson, who is 62, tells The Verge . In a job interview for his role at SpaceX, Johnson says he was asked whether he’d “be okay” working with young colleagues. “In the culture, in the environment of SpaceX, old people are rare. And when I say old people, I mean anyone over 40.” Over the four years Johnson worked... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/pUJdNPo

Spotify Wrapped 2022 is here, and it’s giving everyone a ‘music personality’

In this year’s Wrapped, Spotify is assigning listeners a Myers–Briggs-esque “music personality.” | Image: Spotify Spotify Wrapped is here, and with it, a slew of year-end charts, data, and graphics ripe for sharing. In addition to the standard personal data (top artists, songs, etc.), Spotify is providing listeners with social-friendly stats the company hopes will generate the kind of buzz it has in the past, spurring competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music to produce their own year-end roundups. The splashiest new Wrapped goody is the “music personality” feature — a Myers–Briggs-esque system that analyzes how you listen and assigns you one of 16 flattering categories, such as “Adventurer,” “Fanclubber,” and “Specialist.” It’s a savvy move; whether zodiac sign or Hogwarts house, the kids simply love to be categorized. The new Wrapped also... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/ucPQn1y

How to find your Apple Music Replay

Illustration by Samar Haddad / The Verge I am a devoted Apple Music user , and you will pry the service out of my cold, dead hands. Still, I’ve spent the past few Decembers incredibly jealous of the sea of Spotify rewinds that populated my friends’ social media profiles. Sure, Apple has always had ways to see your most-played songs over given periods of time. But it hasn’t had anything nearly as comprehensive or interesting as what Spotify puts out — at least, until this year. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Replay, Apple Music’s new answer to Spotify Wrapped, is quite the same as its time-honored competitor. Still, it shows you the basics — your top artists, your top songs, stuff like that. Here’s how to get it up and running. How to look up your Apple... World’s first test run of a hydrogen jet engine a success

A Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A regional aircraft engine converted to perform a hydrogen test at Boscombe Down in the UK. | Image: Rolls-Royce Rolls-Royce and European airline easyJet announced that they’ve successfully tested a hydrogen jet engine — technology the companies hope might eventually help erase aviation’s greenhouse gas emissions. The ground test marks “the world’s first run of a modern aero engine on hydrogen,” Rolls-Royce said in a press release yesterday. Aviation is considered one of the most difficult industries to clean up because it’s much harder to make electric planes than electric vehicles. Batteries charged with renewable solar and wind energy are still too bulky for long flights. So airlines and plane manufacturers are working to develop planes that can run on cleaner fuels like hydrogen, which produces water vapor instead of carbon dioxide when burned.... Why some tech CEOs are rooting for Elon Musk

Kristen Radtke / The Verge; Getty Images After a long weekend away, today let’s talk about the largely positive reception that Elon Musk’s radical remaking of Twitter is getting from tech CEOs — and whether those views are likely to change if the fight that Musk is picking with Apple erodes even more value from his $44 billion purchase. The CEO’s revenge Last week, Musk publicly mocked Twitter’s somewhat notorious “Stay Woke” T-shirts. The shirts, which the company produced in 2016 in response to the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, were considered suspect even at the time. In those days, it was the left rolling its eyes — particularly after then-CEO Jack Dorsey wore the shirt during a Code Conference interview , giving the impression that a phrase that had... Italian car company Lancia is being reborn as an EV-only brand

Lancia’s new wordmark featuring its new brand font. | Image: Lancia Lancia, the Italian car company owned by Stellantis alongside Fiat, Chrysler, Citroën, Vauxhall, and Peugeot, is being revived as an electric car brand . The company announced plans to produce three electric vehicles between 2024 and 2028: a new Ypsilon , new Delta , and an unnamed “new flagship.” The brand is also getting a new logo, the eighth in its 116-year long history, which harks back to its 1957 design. By 2028, the plan is for Lancia to exclusively sell electric vehicles. But, as Electrek notes , the company only sells a single car (the Ypsilon) in a single market (Italy). So it shouldn’t be too hard to phase out sales of its combustion engine cars. Image: Lancia Lancia Brand CEO Luca Napolitano stands in... How a tiny briefcase-sized spacecraft will prospect for water on the Moon

An artist’s illustration of the Lunar Flashlight mission. | Image: NASA The Artemis I mission isn’t the only lunar mission happening this month. On Wednesday, November 30th , a SpaceX Falcon 9 is expected to launch a commercial Japanese lander called Hakuto-R to the Moon, carrying the United Arab Emirates Rashid rover. And there will also be an extra payload tucked inside the rocket: a tiny orbiter called Lunar Flashlight. As part of a wave of increased commercial interest in the Moon , the lander could be among the first private missions to land on the Moon — although, as the Israeli lander Beresheet demonstrated when it crashed into the Moon in 2019, touching down safely on the Moon’s surface still remains a challenge that a private mission has yet to overcome. As for the small Rashid rover, this is the... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/b2R3yeC

Today I learned LG makes a space-saving cubicle monitor

The LG Libero sits flush against partitions. | Image: LG Desk space is pretty limited when you’re working inside a cubicle, but LG’s 27-inch Libero Monitor could help you clear up a little more room. The monitor, which LG released back in August, comes with a two-way stand that lets you either hang it up on the wall of your workspace or have it stand on its own. The Libero’s design is pretty clever. It actually hangs upside down when hooked to the included partition hanger, and then flips right side up when set atop your desk. LG says it automatically adjusts its screen orientation when flipped, and it also comes with a detachable webcam (along with two webcam ports), so you can partake in video calls no matter how it’s mounted. That said, it seems like a useful external monitor or a... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/NGv1yca

The Genki Covert Dock Mini lets me put an entire gaming system in my purse

That’s it. That’s the dock. | Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge Friday afternoons growing up meant a trip to the video store. It was an utter thrill, like a little weekly Christmas, where my mom would turn my sister and me loose among the laminated, empty VHS boxes to pick out something to rent for the weekend. And as a rare treat, she would sometimes relent to our whining and let us take home the Holy Grail of rentals: a Sega console. A teenage Video Update employee would retrieve it for us and make sure that the controllers and cords were all accounted for in a massive, nuclear-code-style suitcase. That’s what carrying an entire game console looked like in 1993. Things are a little different now. A few weeks ago, I packed our game console to take it along on a family vacation. The DOJ is reportedly investigating rent-setting software company RealPage

Image: TC Sottek / The Verge The Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division has reportedly opened up an investigation into RealPage, the real estate technology company accused of contributing to higher-than-normal rent prices. This comes after last month’s report from ProPublica , which revealed that RealPage’s YieldStar software uses an algorithm to “help landlords push the highest possible rents on tenants.” As noted by ProPublica , YieldStar’s algorithm uses the non-public rental rates gathered from the landlords and property managers that are its clients. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the most versatile gadget you can buy

The size of the Fold 4’s inner display changes how you think about what a smartphone can do. | Photo by Allison Johnson / The Verge It’s easy to see the appeal of folding phones — they are big screen devices that get smaller to fit in your pocket. It’s also easy to see the drawbacks; as much as Samsung tries to hide it with trade-in promotions, there’s no denying the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s $1,800 price tag is too steep for the vast majority of people. The question of durability is also hard to ignore — it doesn’t take much searching to find tales of randomly cracked Fold screens. But until you commit and start using a device like the Fold 4 for some time, it’s hard to see the value that a folding phone can bring. Covering topics like jealousy, climate anxiety, and attraction, she accrued about 15,000 downloads in her first 10 months. Not bad for an Anchor podcast but nothing to write home about. Splinter Cell is getting a… radio adaptation?

The BBC has just announced Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Firewall , an adaptation of the Splinter Cell novel of the same name released earlier this year starring Will Poulter. In the context of the many recent big-budget game adaptations for the big and small screen alike, a radio play sounds like an odd choice for what was once one of Ubisoft’s flagship franchises. Musk described the new manual authentication process as “ painful, but necessary. ” Verified check marks will also be expanded with additional colors — gold for companies, grey for the government, and the original blue for individual accounts. As it turns out, offering so-called verified check marks for an $8 monthly subscription without actually verifying identities wasn’t a brilliant idea. Videos shared on social media appear to show workers being kicked by hazmat-suited officials during Foxconn protests in Zhengzhou, central China. | Image: @StephenMcDonell Protests have broken out at Foxconn’s vast iPhone factory in Zhengzhou, central China, as footage circulating on social media shows workers clashing with baton-wielding riot police and hazmat-suited officials. The protests started after workers, who have been under strict covid lockdown for weeks, learned bonus payments would be delayed, reports The Wall Street Journal . Apple announced earlier this month that it expected lower shipments of premium iPhone 14 models due to disruptions created by the covid lockdowns at the same Foxconn facility. Zhengzhou, known locally as “iPhone city ,” is home to an estimated 200,000 workers who are responsible for the vast majority of all iPhone production. WARNING: Graphic Content. Musk antagonist George Hotz hired to fix Twitter search — he’s got 12 weeks

Hotz demonstrating his former company’s advanced driver assistance technology. | Photo by Michael Zelenko / The Verge George Hotz, the noted iPhone hacker who was reported to have once turned down a job at Tesla working on its driver-assistance technology, has embarked upon a 12-week “internship” at Twitter under Elon Musk’s leadership. Hotz said his priority at the social media company is to fix its search feature, as well as to remove the prompt that prevents you from browsing the service on the web without logging in. The internship came about after Hotz expressed support for Musk’s “extremely hardcore” ultimatum to Twitter’s employees, which demanded that they work “long hours at high intensity” or else depart the company. Hotz said that “ this is the attitude that builds incredible things ” and that he’d be willing to do an internship at the company.... Speaking to the Financial Times , Izumi Kawanishi, the joint venture’s president, said that it’s “technologically possible” for Sony to integrate the PlayStation 5 platform into the car it intends to build with Honda. Tesla started delivering its latest Model S and X vehicles with larger horizontal screens last year and added an AMD RDNA 2 graphics chip that Tesla CEO Elon Musk said is “literally at the level of a PlayStation 5” during a demo . Over a year later, Musk’s promises for big games like Cyberpunk 2077 and a demo for Steam in August have yet to be fulfilled, with the most notable... Key art for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla . | Image: Ubisoft Ubisoft is bringing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla , Anno 1800, and Roller Champions to Steam, arguably its first major releases on Valve’s PC distribution platform since 2019. “We’re constantly evaluating how to bring our games to different audiences wherever they are, while providing a consistent player ecosystem through Ubisoft Connect,” reads part of a statement from Ubisoft spokesperson Jessica Roache to The Verge . Roache declined to say whether that means Ubisoft will now regularly bring games to Steam or if it’ll be on a case-by-case basis. It’s not clear why Ubisoft stopped putting its PC games on Steam or why it’s coming back now, but it appears to be picking up where it left off: Valhalla was the 2020 flagship game in the Assassin’s... Bob Iger steps back in as Disney CEO, replacing Bob Chapek

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge In a sudden turn of events, Disney has reversed the CEO swap that surprised us in early 2020 , with Bob Iger returning to his post , replacing his own successor, Bob Chapek. Iger, who is also the company’s largest shareholder, is now set to serve a new two-year term as CEO. Part of Iger’s job in those two years will be to pick and groom his long-term successor. Of course, Chapek was an Iger choice too. Chapek had been called the “Tim Cook to Iger’s Steve Jobs,” but during his tenure, their handover got off to a rocky start, while blowups like the Scarlett Johansson Black Widow lawsuit and Disney’s initial lack of reaction to the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida scuffed its all-important reputation. During an episode of the Decoder podcast... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/z85Sqfd
