Hurricane Ian flooded some Florida hospitals — climate change puts even more at risk

Photo by Paul Hennessy/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images Rising sea levels and increasing storm intensity will put more and more hospitals in danger of flooding, just like the ones facing Hurricane Ian this week, a new study found. Ian sent water pouring into HCA Florida Fawcett Hospital in Port Charlotte, Florida, this week. The hurricane churned through the coastal town just north of Fort Myers on Wednesday, flooding the building’s lower levels just as winds ripped the roof off — letting the pounding rain in from above. Doctors in the hospital were expecting issues, internal medicine specialist Birgit Bodine told The Associated Press . “We didn’t anticipate that the roof would blow off on the fourth floor,” she said. Doctors at the hospital are doing their best to care for patients on the... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/qaFW7PL

How to watch Tesla’s 2022 AI Day event

Elon Musk said he expects to show off a prototype of the Tesla Bot. | Image: Tesla Tesla’s AI Day kicks off today, September 30th, at which Elon Musk has said he hopes to show off a working prototype of the company’s humanoid robot, Optimus . The event, which will be held at Tesla’s headquarters in Palo Alto, California, will be livestreamed for the public and is estimated to start at 5PM PT / 8PM ET — assuming the event begins around the same time as last year’s AI Day. The company hasn’t yet shared details on tuning into the AI event, but it’ll likely be streamed on its YouTube account like the first Tesla AI Day. We don’t have a lot of details about what will be announced, but based on the invitation, we’re likely to hear about the “latest developments in artificial intelligence, including Full Self-Driving, Tesla... The best Nintendo Switch controllers to buy right now

Each option (except for the Hori Split Pad Pro and 8BitDo USB Adapter) is compatible with all Switch models, including Switch Lite. The best controllers for your Nintendo Switch aren’t the ones that come with each system. The removable Joy-Cons included with all Switch consoles (except for the Switch Lite) are convenient since they can be detached to use as wireless controllers for two people. But their tiny, contourless design isn’t that comfortable for long gaming sessions or large hands. And don’t get me started on the dreaded Joy-Con drift . Thankfully, you have plenty of alternatives, though only some of them are worth your money. In this buying guide, I focus on wireless controllers that are comfortable and reliable and a few with unique features that enhance your play time, like input customization and long battery life. I’m not covering wired controllers that... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/TxdLOar

Zendure launches a giant ‘semi-solid state’ battery on motorized wheels

Image: Zendure Zendure’s SuperBase V is the largest and most powerful portable battery yet. Not only can the 6.4kWh battery-on-wheels be expanded to 64kWh via stackable modules, it stores electrons in what the company calls the “first home energy system with semi-solid state batteries.” It can accept up to 3,000W of solar input, can be charged at a level 2 EV station, and includes external running lights, voice control, and powered wheels (because of course it does). According to Zendure, semi-solid state batteries offer 42 percent higher energy density and improved safety compared to lithium-ion phosphate (aka, LFP or LiFePO4) batteries — the current gold standard. As Professor Hobo explains it on YouTube , Zendure’s semi-solid state batteries are... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/2APxO9o

Remembering all those times Google said it was committed to Stadia

In the end, were we not the ones getting played? | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Come January, Google will be shutting down its Stadia cloud gaming service. In some ways, the move isn’t much of a surprise — as my colleagues have pointed out, there’s been doubt about whether Google was in it for the long haul with Stadia basically ever since it was announced in March 2019 . If you’ve been listening to what the company said about the service, though, you’d be forgiven for being blindsided. Up until the very end, Google insisted there’s a wonderful future for Stadia, and that players should keep signing up for and using the service, despite rumors that it was about to go bust. Now that Stadia’s officially being shut down, let’s take a look at the times Google promised us this wouldn’t happen. October 2019 — “It is a long... Food delivery drone lands on power lines resulting in power outage for thousands

The Wing delivery drone on the power lines . | Image: Energex via ABC Radio Brisbane A food delivery drone operated by Alphabet subsidiary Wing landed on overhead power lines in Brisbane, Australia, and caught fire. As a result, the network was shut down by energy firm Energex to respond to the incident, leaving thousands without power. Some 2,000 individuals were left without electricity for around 45 minutes, reports ABC News and The Age , while 300 customers had no power for three hours. Energex spokesman Danny Donald told The Age that the drone “landed on top of 11,000 volts and whilst it didn’t take out power, there was voltage tracking across the drone and the drone caught fire and fell to the ground.” A spokesperson for Wing told the publication that the drone made a “precautionary controlled landing yesterday …... PlayerUnknown’s new game sounds outrageously ambitious

A small example of what Melba can do. | Image: PlayerUnknown Productions Hey, remember PlayerUnknown? As in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG to your friends? Yeah, well Brendan Greene, aka PlayerUnknown, has provided details surrounding his latest gaming project, codenamed “Artemis,” which aims to be an open-source Earth-sized virtual environment supporting hundreds of thousands of players that can make or play whatever they want. Here’s the rub, though. Greene also wants users to be able to monetize what they make, essentially turning all user-generated content into NFTs. In an interview with Nathan Brown on the Hit Points newsletter , Greene mentions, “We’re building a digital place that has to have an economy, and it has to have systems at work. Eero’s best mesh Wi-Fi routers are back down to their lowest prices

The Eero Pro 6 isn’t the latest model, but it might be all you need. It offers two 5GHz bands and one 2.4GHz band with support for dozens of devices connected simultaneously. | Photo by Dan Seifert / The Verge After a day full of product announcements , Amazon is getting back to cutting prices on its hardware — both new-ish and old-ish. Specifically, there are some great discounts happening once again on the company’s Eero lineup of smart mesh Wi-Fi routers. These prices match the ones that we saw back in early July just before the company launched Prime Day 2022. (Little did we know Amazon was planning another big sale that’s happening soon on October 11th and 12th). If you want another chance to grab a single Eero Pro 6E for $120 off, you can get one for $179 through Eero or Amazon’s site. This is currently the company’s highest-end router that can blanket up to 2,000 square feet by itself. It also features two ethernet ports and, notably, a... Continue reading… from Th

Tumblr is begging you to please stop asking for porn

Tumblr’s logo. | Photo: Amelia Holowaty Krales Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg would like you to please stop asking Tumblr to bring back porn because it isn’t going to happen. After widespread and inaccurate speculation that Tumblr would lift its ban on adult content, Mullenweg posted a long explanation yesterday of why Tumblr will never go back to the old days. Or, in his words: “the casually porn-friendly era of the early internet is currently impossible.” That doesn’t mean Tumblr’s policies will stay the same. Mullenweg has said before that Automattic (which bought Tumblr in 2019) wants to loosen the rules its old owner Verizon implemented in 2018, and he reiterated that here, echoing comments he made earlier this week. Verizon’s ban “took out not only porn but also a ton of art and... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/Hhk20gQ

Twitch is temporarily restricting browser support to just Chrome, Edge, and Firefox

Twitch has caused confusion among its users by restricting browser support to just Chrome, Edge and Firefox. | Nick Barclay / The Verge Poor communications from Twitch have led to confusion following the service announcing that Chrome, Edge, and Firefox are currently the only web browsers officially supported by the popular streaming platform. No context was provided within the announcement, though it appears the restrictions are temporary and have been placed on alternative browsers so that Twitch can locate and shut down access points being used to create masses of bot accounts. The issues started when users started experiencing errors when logging into the service. Twitch Support then addressed the situation by asking users to login from an up-to-date version of the three supported web browsers, and announced that a help article to address troubleshooting the issues... Skullcandy’s new wireless gaming headset has a quirky design and Tile integration

The PLYR has a unique (definitely divisive) design. The company owned Astro Gaming throughout most of the 2010s, which it later sold to Logitech in 2017 . It’s been relatively quiet on the gaming front since then, but Skullcandy’s now back with a new lineup of headsets. There are three, ranging in price and functionality — each accented with a slightly different-looking printer color test page pattern on their sidearms (my interpretation, not Skullcandy’s). There’s the $59.99 wired SLYR, the $99.99 wired but more feature-packed SLYR Pro, and finally, the $129.99 PLYR wireless headset , pictured above, that has the full range of bells and whistles. The Bills had a chance to run one more play to win the game, but the team ultimately ran out of time, losing to the Dolphins 19-21. LG is price-slashing 2022 OLED TVs at Best Buy

The C2 in today’s deal features one of LG’s “Evo” panels that boasts a higher brightness level than its previous-generation panel. | Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge At Best Buy, a host of LG electronics are seeing a discount through Saturday. This includes a few of its 2022 OLED TVs, some of which have received bigger price drops than I’ve seen occur before. Starting with the deal that’s the best value in terms of size and specs, LG’s 55-inch B2 OLED is $999.99 (originally $1,599.99). For context, Amazon is selling it for about $300 more at the time of publishing. The B2 is LG’s midrange model; it has more features than the A-series OLED, but not as many as the C2 Evo model. Even so, movie, TV show, and gaming enthusiasts should find nearly everything they’re after with the B2, including a virtually infinite contrast ratio, the deepest of black color presentation, and a 120Hz refresh rate panel. On... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/FiUVjPM

Forget streaming and cable: baseball is best on the radio

Hey Google, bring me the sweet sounds of post-season Mariners baseball on the radio. | Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Friday Twitter, in case you missed it, featured an extremely dumb discourse involving cable, streaming services, the Yankees, and somehow, New York’s Attorney General. The gist is this: Aaron Judge was poised to tie (and maybe overtake?) Roger Maris’ American League record of 61 home runs in a season (he did not). The game against the Red Sox aired on Apple TV Plus rather than New York’s regional cable sports network, YES. Some people got mad about that — presumably people who own bars in New York and show baseball games — including the state Attorney General . Others rightly pointed out that watching a game on a paid cable service is in no way more accessible than watching on a free streaming app. But here’s the thing: you don’t need... The timing is always right to find at least one model selling at a deep discount. In fact, Apple recently launched its latest batch of smartwatches for 2022, including the $399 Series 8 , the new $249 SE, and the first-ever $799 Ultra , which is aimed at outdoor enthusiasts and swimmers. There are now more Apple Watch models on the market than ever before, so you have plenty to choose from. But with all of those options, which one should you pick? If you can decide based on specs, here’s a handy breakdown to make it easy to see what one model offers over another. France announces minimum €3 book delivery fee to help booksellers compete with Amazon

Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images The French government has announced it will introduce a minimum charge for book deliveries of €3 (about $2.92) in order to help small booksellers compete with retailing giant Amazon, reports Reuters . The minimum fee will only apply to orders under €35 (about $34.12). It’s the latest measure by the French government to balance competition in the book sector and follows a decades-long tradition of protectionist laws. Since 1981, France has mandated fixed prices for books , with a maximum discount of 5 percent, and in 2010 expanded this law to cover ebooks . In 2014, the French government banned the free deliveries of books , to which Amazon responded by charging customers a single cent (€0.01) for delivery. In an effort to close this... How to use the Apple Watch Ultra’s Action button

The Action button adds another layer of personalization | Illustration by Samar Haddad / The Verge The Apple Watch Ultra introduced one of the most significant design tweaks to the Apple Watch since its inception — the Action button. While every other Apple Watch has two physical controls, the Action button is a third that’s meant to help outdoor athletes pause workouts, turn on the flashlight, call for help with a siren, and more. The main logic is that, unlike touchscreens, physical buttons are immune to sweaty fingers and gloves . While it’s likely the Action button will evolve over time, at launch, it’s essentially a set of preselected shortcuts or “actions.” Your options are Workout, Stopwatch, Waypoint, Backtrack, Dive, Flashlight, and Shortcuts. Some of these actions have secondary functions dubbed “gestures.” Within each... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/zlHLFcu

The world’s largest carbon removal project yet is headed for Wyoming

A rendering of an aerial view of CarbonCapture’s direct air capture modules. | Image: CarbonCapture A couple of climate tech startups plan to suck a hell of a lot of carbon dioxide out of the air and trap it underground in Wyoming. The goal of the new endeavor, called Project Bison , is to build a new facility capable of drawing down 5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually by 2030. The CO2 can then be stored deep within the Earth, keeping it out of the atmosphere, where it would have continued to heat up the planet. A Los Angeles-based company called CarbonCapture is building the facility, called a direct air capture (DAC) plant, that is expected to start operations as early as next year. It’ll start small and work up to 5 million metric tons a year. If all goes smoothly by 2030, the operation will be orders of magnitude larger... The US officially commits to global pact to drop planet-heating refrigerants

Air conditioner units sit in windows of an apartment building on July 20th, 2022, in Washington, DC.  | Photo by Anna Moneymaker / Getty Images The Senate finally voted to ratify the landmark Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which commits the US to quickly phase down the use of a certain class of refrigerants that also happens to be a super greenhouse gas. Specifically, the Kigali Amendment pushes developed countries to slash the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) — found in air conditioning, refrigerators, and fire extinguishers — by 85 percent by 2036 The plan was drafted back in 2016 by delegates from countries seeking to update the Montreal Protocol, which sought to protect and repair the ozone layer back in the 1980s. The Montreal Protocol focused on reducing the use of ozone-depleting substances called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons... We’re in a golden age for skateboarding games

Session: Skate Sim. | Image: Crea-ture Studios The last few years have been a wonderful time for skateboarding game fans. The highlight, of course, was the 2020 remaster of the first two Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games , but there’s also been the slick mobile take on shredding with Skate City and the ridiculously over-the-top OlliOlli World from earlier this year . What’s great is that each of these titles has its own distinct flavor, whether you want to get in a short session on your phone or grind through an alien landscape. Now, we have another take on virtual skateboarding — and it might be the most realistic I’ve ever played. Session: Skate Sim is out now after a period of early access, and it’s something of a spiritual successor to the Skate series ( which is itself making a comeback...
