Cannondale joins the electric cargo bike party

The Wonderwagen Neo (left) and Cargowagen Neo (right) are Cannondale’s first cargo bikes. | Image: Cannondale Cannondale is announcing its first electric cargo bikes today with the Cargowagen Neo long-tail model launching in the US, and the Wonderwagen Neo front-loader headed exclusively to Europe. They aren’t cheap until you compare them to the $12,000 annual cost to own and operate a car , which these heavy haulers are designed to replace. Having the 52-year-old Connecticut-based bicycle maker — owned by Dutch giant Pon Holdings — finally release not one but two cargo bikes is just the latest sign that we’re truly entering a golden age for e-cargo bikes . The Cargowagen Neo is coming to the US “this winter” with a price that starts at $4,300, or €4,000 when it lands in Europe a bit earlier this fall. It’s a long-tail e-cargo bike powered by a... LG’s suitcase TV is as sturdy as it is bizarre

The TV neatly folded down into its suitcase. | Photo by Jon Porter / The Verge LG’s StanbyME Go, its bizarre $999.99 27-inch suitcase TV announced for the US earlier this month , is on show in Berlin at a corner of its booth at IFA 2023 . We had a poke around the demo model being displayed on the show floor, and couldn’t find any of the games that are apparently optimized for its touchscreen. But we were able to get acquainted with its robust articulating design. The TV can be swiveled from portrait into landscape, and set at any angle from straight upwards to straight forwards. The stand mechanism feels nice and sturdy, and you definitely need two hands to move it around. On the back there’s a single HDMI port and USB input, as well as a power socket for its built-in battery (LG advertises around three hours of... The Eve Play brings AirPlay 2 audio to your Hi-Fi gear this November

The Eve Play is AirPlay 2-ready. | Image: Eve Eve announced it’s releasing a $149.95 AirPlay 2 receiver called the Eve Play — its first audio device — on November 14th. Though a little pricey, the receiver looks aimed at audiophiles: it’s got optical, coaxial, and RCA audio outputs, 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, a built-in DAC, and an ethernet port. Eve says you can adjust latency between speakers automatically or manually using the Eve app’s Audio Sync feature if you’re finding multiroom audio isn’t perfectly synchronized. Users will need an iPhone or iPad to use it, as well as a home network to connect it to either via Wi-Fi or ethernet. Image: Eve The Eve Play has a great set of outputs for a variety of setups, but no inputs. Wireless receivers like this with... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/aLTJ8rV

Lotus will reveal its electric Emeya hypercar September 7th

Image: Lotus Lotus’ next electric hypercar, the 2024 Emeya, will get an official reveal in New York City on September 7th, the British automaker announced. And what hypercar reveal would be complete without a lot of, well, hyperbole? Lotus says the Emeya will be “the most advanced fully electric hyper Grand Tourer (GT) in the world.” Teaser images show sharp LED front lights and a full-width rear taillight... and not much else. The Emeya was previously known by the codename Type 133, using the same architecture as the Eletre (aka Type 132) and boasting many of the same specs. Lotus, which is owned by China’s Geely, is in the process of reinventing itself for the electric age. The Emeya will be the second of three new EVs that Lotus plans to roll out... OnePlus’ impressive first tablet just received its first discount

With high-end specs and a midrange price, the OnePlus Pad is a welcome return to form. | Image: Dan Seifert / The Verge It’s been a surprisingly good year for Android tablets, with Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 series and the Google Pixel Tablet both having launched within the past couple of months. The OnePlus Pad also arrived earlier this year, and though it might not carry the same clout as a Google or Samsung tablet, it’s a solid device that’s available from OnePlus right now with a free OnePlus Stylo stylus for $429.99 ($50 off). For the money, OnePlus’ first tablet packs a bit of punch. The 11.6-inch slate is less expensive than competing devices from Google, Apple, and Samsung, yet it comes with an array of high-end features, including a quad-speaker system and a pixel-dense LCD display that refreshes at up to 144Hz. It also features a 7:5 aspect ratio... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/kOznVYc

How to send books to your Kindle — even if they’re not from Amazon

Illustration by Will Joel / The Verge Amazon’s Kindle is a useful reading tool , especially if you tend to purchase your books through Amazon. If you have ebooks that you’ve purchased elsewhere, however — or have picked up off a free service such as Project Gutenberg — you need to be able to put it on your Kindle (or Kindle app). Getting a non-Amazon book onto a Kindle used to be a somewhat awkward process, involving attaching it to an email and sending it to your individual Kindle email address. However, Amazon’s Send to Kindle service has improved vastly since then, and it is now a fairly simple process. But first, a note: if you’re a long-term Kindle user who hasn’t been paying attention to the news, you may be surprised to see ePub listed — and not Mobi. Amazon added... The Garmin Venu 3 series will finally give you credit for naps

The Garmin Venu 3S (left five models) and Venu 3 will both retail for $449.99. | Image: Garmin Garmin is launching the Venu 3 and 3S today, and there’s good news for nap lovers. The company is debuting a new Sleep Coach feature that includes both personalized coaching and automatic nap detection. Nap tracking is a timely addition. Sleep is increasingly a popular focus among wearables companies. Samsung, for example, has been working hard the last two years to build out its native sleep tracking offerings, and Google also added Fitbit’s Sleep Profile feature to the Pixel Watch . So it’s been admittedly odd that Garmin devices haven’t been able to automatically detect naps . (You’ll also be able to manually log naps as well.) This is especially true since sleep — and therefore naps — is a factor when calculating recovery and... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/gCtTKoO

The Fairphone 5 is a little more repairable and much more modern

The Fairphone 5 with its repairable guts on show for all to see. | Image: Fairphone The Fairphone 5 is the latest sustainably produced and repairable handset from Dutch smartphone company Fairphone. Like its previous devices, the Fairphone 5 is made with ethically sourced materials by workers who are given a living wage bonus and is designed to be easy to repair with a lengthy software support period. But this year’s model is specced-out much more like a modern midrange smartphone, with an OLED display, fast 30W charging, and dual 50-megapixel cameras at the rear. Fairphone is taking preorders for the Fairphone 5 starting today, and the smartphone ships on September 14th in Europe. Prices start at €699 in the eurozone or £619 in the UK. That translates to roughly $758, though Fairphone has no plans for a US release for... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/HkXf39Y

Grubhub is bringing Amazon’s cashierless tech to colleges this fall

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Grubhub’s bringing Amazon’s cashierless Just Walk Out technology to some colleges, the company announced today. The food delivery service will first focus on rolling out the tech to colleges, starting with Loyola University Maryland next week before expanding nationwide. The tech is capable of identifying items taken from and returned to shelves so students and staff can buy food from on-campus stores without waiting in line. After scanning a QR code in the Grubhub app, the company will automatically charge their Grubhub-linked meal plans or other stored payment methods after they leave the store. “With Just Walk Out technology and Grubhub, students, faculty, and staff will find a convenient way to purchase the items they need with a... Google made a watermark for AI images that you can’t edit out

With SynthID, you should be able to edit a photo all you want without destroying the AI watermark. | Image: Google The Google DeepMind team has believed for years that building great generative AI tools also requires building great tools to detect what has been created by AI. There are plenty of obvious, high-stakes reasons why, says Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis . “Every time we talk about it and other systems, it’s, ‘What about the problem of deepfakes?’” With another contentious election season coming in 2024 in both the US and the UK, Hassabis says that building systems to identify and detect AI imagery is more important all the time. Hassabis and his team have been working on a tool for the last few years, which Google is releasing publicly today. It’s called SynthID, and it’s designed to essentially watermark an AI-generated image in a way... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/ngjSdaV

The new Google Chat borrows from Slack, Teams, Discord, and even ChatGPT

Google Chat now looks more like Slack. And Teams. And everything else. | Image: Google Google is making some big changes to Google Chat, its answer to Slack and Microsoft Teams. The messaging app — aka The Product Formerly Known As Hangouts — is getting a new design, some features that will feel distinctly familiar to Slack and Teams users, and a lot of Google’s new Duet AI collaboration tools. Most of the new features are rolling out later this year and early next, but they add up to a much more useful and competitive Chat platform. Duet is the flagship new feature and potentially a reason for a lot of Workspace users to start using Chat. You can use Duet to search and ask questions about all your stuff in Drive and Gmail and summarize both documents and conversations. You’ll also be able to use AI-powered autocorrect in... Google Meet’s new AI will be able to go to meetings for you

Next time you zone out in a meeting, Meet can help you catch up on what you missed. | Image: Google If Google Meet’s new AI tools are as good as advertised, you might never need to pay attention to another meeting again — or even show up at all. At its Cloud Next conference today, Google revealed a handful of new AI-powered features coming soon to Meet. One of the biggest new AI-enabled features is the ability for Google’s Duet AI to take notes in real time: click “take notes for me,” and the app will capture a summary and action items as the meeting is going on. If you’re late to a meeting, Google will be able to show you a mid-meeting summary so that you can catch up on what happened. A first look at the new Starfield Xbox Series X wraps

Photo by Tom Warren / The Verge Microsoft has created custom limited edition Xbox consoles for years, but it’s now offering up a way to customize your existing Xbox Series X console without having to buy a new one. The new Xbox Series X wraps were announced last week , with a Starfield -branded version arriving in October, followed by camo editions in November. I’ve been trying out the Starfield one. The Xbox Series X wrap folds down neatly into a package that’s the width of the console, and when attached will cover all the sides fully with the exception of the rear. It feels very similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro keyboards: soft to touch, thin, and lightweight. The wrap fits snugly around an Xbox Series X and is held in place by velcro at the rear. first look at the... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/jvmueES

Samba de Amigo just isn’t quite the same without maracas controllers

The cutely deranged monkey mascot is back, and this time, he’s dancing with Joy-Con-powered maracas. | Image: Sega The halcyon days of plastic instrument controllers may be long gone, but there hasn’t been a moment in recent memory where I yearned for it more than while playing Samba de Amigo: Party Central on the Nintendo Switch. The new music rhythm game from Sega launching August 29th ( $39.99 standard edition / $49.99 deluxe edition ) successfully resurrects the long-dormant quirky darling of the Dreamcast. But as fun as it is, I just can’t shake a strange feeling that something is missing — wait, I know exactly what it’s missing. It’s missing the joyous shake of real maracas in your hands. WhatsApp could soon let you share original quality pictures and videos

Image: The Verge WhatsApp is working on a feature that will let you share original quality photos and videos. As spotted by WABetaInfo , the app now includes an option to “select original quality photos or videos” in version 2.23.18.12 of the WhatsApp beta for Android. The app will treat the images and videos as documents, however. A screenshot taken by WABetaInfo shows a new option to “choose from gallery” in the app’s document picker, which specifically mentions the ability to send original quality photos and videos. Google’s AI-powered note-taking app is the messy beginning of something great

Illustration: The Verge What if you could have a conversation with your notes? That question has consumed a corner of the internet recently , as companies like Dropbox , Box, Notion , and others have built generative AI tools that let you interact with and create new things from the data you already have in their systems. Google’s version of this is called NotebookLM . It’s an AI-powered research tool that is meant to help you organize and interact with your own notes. (Google originally announced it earlier this year as Project Tailwind but quickly changed the name .) Right now, it’s really just a prototype, but a small team inside the company has been trying to figure out what an AI notebook might look like. Dolby might have found a way to make built-in TV speakers sound much better

Image: Dolby Dolby Atmos is about to get a whole lot more adaptable. Today, Dolby is announcing Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, which it describes as “a new feature that seamlessly pairs together a TV’s sound system with accessory wireless speakers to deliver a more extensive and immersive Dolby Atmos sound experience.” Since it factors your TV speakers into the equation, FlexConnect doesn’t necessarily require a soundbar at the center of everything. TCL will become the first TV manufacturer to offer FlexConnect with its upcoming 2024 TV lineup, and it also plans to release a line of wireless speakers optimized to support the feature. The iPad Pro could get bigger screens and OLED next year, but it should do more

My 2021 iPad Pro 11-inch. | Image: Wes Davis / The Verge As the third tier of Apple’s connected personal computing devices, the iPad sits in an awkward place in 2023. It’s a supremely capable product, there’s no doubt about that. It’s powerful and responsive; most of the models have beautiful screens; and its interface is friendly. But it’s also incomplete and insistent on doing things the Apple-prescribed way. And even as it dominates the tablet landscape, sales of iPads have withered since 2020 , as Mark Gurman noted in Bloomberg today. In short: it needs more. To be clear, I like my 2021 iPad Pro a lot. It’s a nice device for reading and solid for watching TV in bed. It’s also indispensable for following recipes while I’m cooking. But when Steve Jobs first introduced the iPad in 2010, saying... Judge dismisses Republican lawsuit against Google over Gmail’s spam filtering

The suit complained Google intentionally sent RNC political emails to Gmail users’ spam folders , and the RNC sought restitution for “donations it allegedly lost as a result” of those lost emails. The RNC cited a North Carolina State University study that found Gmail was more likely to mark emails from Republican campaigns as spam. Maui County says Hawaiian Electric caused deadly blazes in new lawsuit

The utility “acted negligently by failing to power down their electrical equipment despite a National Weather Service Red Flag Warning” on August 7th, Maui County alleges . The suit says Hawaiian Electric’s downed power lines, while still energized, caused the fire by igniting dry grass and brush . It also alleges that the utility failed to maintain the power grid, causing “systemic failures” that sparked three blazes on August 8th. The county is suing for civil damages affecting public property. The utility “acted negligently by failing to power down their electrical... Continue reading… from T

Arm’s IPO will tell us how much AI hype matters

When the quarterback snaps the ball, the broadcast might automatically highlight the most open receivers down the field. And as the team marches down the field, you might see lines on the field not just showing a kicker’s field goal range but the exact spot from which he’s more than 50 percent likely to nail the game-winner. Illustration: The Verge Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max service is making a bigger push into news with a new 24/7 CNN stream that’s scheduled to debut on September 27th. It’s called CNN Max , and in a press release this morning, the company said the new service will “be part of an open beta for news that will enable experimentation with product features, content offerings, and original storytelling, all with the input and feedback from the Max community.” CNN Max will be available across all of Max’s subscription tiers. But you shouldn’t confuse it with CNN’s linear cable network; this isn’t quite that. You’ll see many familiar faces; Max says CNN Max will feature some of CNN’s tentpole shows like Anderson Cooper 360 ° , The Lead with Jake Tapper, Amanpour, and The... Intel’s 14th Gen processors leak out thanks to MSI

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Intel is getting ready to launch its 14th Gen desktop processors later this year and now MSI has accidentally spilled all the details. VideoCardz spotted a training video on MSI’s YouTube channel that includes important details on Intel’s unannounced 14th Gen processors, codenamed Raptor Lake-S Refresh. MSI says on average Intel’s 14th Gen processors will be three percent faster than the 13th Gen, but the Core i7 will see a big 17 percent bump to multithread workloads. The video, which The Verge was able to briefly watch before it was made private, reveals that the core counts of the Core i5-14600K and Core i9-14900K will remain the same as their 13th Gen equivalents, but the Core i7-14700K is getting a boost to its performance cores.... Several users have been contacted by scammers using the identify of real Waymo employees. | Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge Several users of Adobe’s art-themed social media platform Behance have encountered an elaborate scam in recent weeks involving fraudulent job offerings from people claiming to be recruiters at autonomous driving tech company Waymo . Detailed information about how the job scam is being operated was published by u/Impressive-Fox-6719 on the Behance subreddit, warning other Behance users to be wary of fake Waymo recruiters offering high-paying design roles. According to the post, the scam is a common fraud scheme that involves sending users a fake job confirmation following an “interview” on Skype, and a cheque to begin purchasing office equipment. After confirming the deposit to the scammers, the money is then instead sent to another person... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/MuVpcxn

Dark Brandon haunts the Fox News website on GOP debate day

Image: Rob Flaherty, Biden 2024 deputy campaign manager There’s no escaping him. “Dark Brandon,” Joe Biden’s undying alter ego, has appeared on everything from baseball caps to crop tops. Now, his menacing red eyes are staring out from the FoxNews.com homepage — where the first GOP presidential debate is set to stream later tonight. Throughout the entire day, Biden’s reelection team will be running an ad campaign featuring the meme on the Fox News website. The ads call attention to Biden’s campaign promises to protect abortion rights, lower the cost of prescription drugs, and defend social security, as first reported by People magazine Wednesday . “Tax cuts for yacht owners?” one ad reads. “Good luck with that, champ.” There he is. The “Dark Brandon” meme is being pushed... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/MRjTHa8

Sony’s PlayStation wireless earbuds will cost a whopping $199.99

Image: Sony In addition to announcing the price of its upcoming PlayStation Portal remote gaming gadget, Sony also shared new details today on the PlayStation-branded wireless earbuds that it first revealed several months ago. They’re officially called the Pulse Explore and will be priced at $199.99, though the company isn’t yet sharing exactly when they’ll be available (or even up for preorder). That’s as much as the Portal device itself and substantially more than any of Microsoft’s first-party Xbox audio peripherals. The Pulse Explore buds come at a premium, but Sony is positioning them as a unique offering for their combination of lossless audio quality and low-latency performance. Sony will also be releasing a new Pulse Elite headset for... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/0ntqp3J

Hands-on: the HyperX Cloud III Wireless makes a great headset even better

Cloud III Wireless versus Cloud II Wireless. | Photo by Sean Hollister / The Verge My colleague Cameron Faulkner called the HyperX Cloud II Wireless “ among the most comfortable headsets I’ve worn .” Today, HP is announcing its successor — the Cloud III Wireless — and I’m happy to say it’s better in most every way. When I heard the new Cloud III Wireless would offer quadruple the battery life at 120 hours versus 30 hours, I figured there had to be a catch. It’s rare that a product just... gets better But after hours comparing the Cloud II and Cloud III side by side and back to back, I haven’t heard, seen, or felt one yet! The new PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch headset does cost $20 more, weighs an extra ounce, and not everyone will appreciate the additional padding — but it’s got the same balanced, punchy sound... India’s Chandrayaan-3 probe successfully lands on the lunar south pole

India is now the first nation to successfully achieve a soft landing near the Moon’s southern pole. | Photo by INDRANIL MUKHERJEE / AFP via Getty Images India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission has made space travel history today by successfully achieving a soft landing near the south pole of Earth’s Moon, just days after Russia’s Luna 25 spacecraft crashed while trying to land in the same region. India is now the fourth nation to achieve a soft Moon landing and the first to have successfully touched down on the lunar south pole — a little-explored area of the Moon that’s believed to contain water ice. Three other nations — the US, China, and the former Soviet Union — have all previously achieved a soft landing near the Moon’s equator, a safer region with (comparatively) amiable temperatures and terrain and reliable sunlight to recharge solar-powered instruments. During a live stream of the... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/LUXwZT4

Corsair’s first standing desk is designed for gaming, streaming, and more

Just look at all the stuff you can mount on this desk. | Image: Corsair Corsair’s Platform:6 is a modular standing desk that’s being targeted at everyone from remote workers to content creators and, naturally, PC gamers. It’ll be available to purchase in the fourth quarter of this year, but Corsair’s website isn’t currently listing any prices for the desk or its many, many accessories. With the Platform:6 due to be offered in multiple configurations that are customizable via an online configurator, it’s a little tricky to work out what’s included as standard, and what’s available as a modular upgrade. But Corsair’s press release suggests that the desk comes with dual monitor arms, a cable management tray, and an in-desk storage cubby with built-in USB Type-A and Type-C charging ports. Most interesting is a... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/5jG3adR

Samsung’s 57-inch ‘Dual UHD’ gaming monitor gets a price and release date

It’s a lot of screen, whichever way you cut it. | Image: Samsung Samsung’s 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9, its massive gaming monitor that’s like having two 32-inch 4K displays sat next to each other, will be available in the US in October for $2,499.99, the company has announced . If you’re in the UK the monitor is available to preorder from today for £2,199.99. If the Odyssey Neo G9 sounds familiar, then that might be for a couple of reasons. Samsung first teased the monitor last November before officially announcing it at CES in January 2023 , albeit without a price or firm release date. But the Odyssey Neo G9 name might also sound familiar because Samsung released a 49-inch model under the same name in 2021 that only offered the combined resolution of two 1440p displays. Nvidia’s new DLSS 3.5 works on all RTX GPUs to improve the quality of ray tracing

Image: Nvidia Nvidia is introducing DLSS 3.5 this fall with a new AI-powered Ray Reconstruction technique that’s designed to improve the quality of ray tracing. Unlike DLSS 3’s Frame Generation , which was limited to just RTX 40-series GPUs, DLSS 3.5 will boost ray tracing across all RTX-series GPUs going back to the RTX 20 series. Nvidia is primarily targeting DLSS 3.5 at games that offer path tracing, often known as full ray tracing, as opposed to titles that use ray tracing just for select elements like shadows or reflections. Cyberpunk 2077 will get support for DLSS 3.5 with its Phantom Liberty DLC releasing on September 26th, which also adds the path tracing previewed earlier this year . Alan Wake 2 will also launch on October 27th with DLSS 3.5... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/rMvda2F

Half-Life 2 is getting remade into a ray-traced beauty thanks to modders

That precious suit has never looked better. | Image: Nvidia A community of modders is developing a ray-traced Half-Life 2 remake using Nvidia’s early access RTX Remix platform, and Nvidia is debuting its first trailer for Gamescom. Half-Life 2 RTX: An RTX Remix Project will not win any awards for good naming, but the beautified update to the PC’s iconic first-person shooter from 2004 may easily win the hearts of those of us with a soft spot for a little nostalgia and high-res headcrabs. The project is the combined efforts of four Half-Life 2 mod teams, now formed as Orbifold Studios, using RTX Remix to rebuild the game using PBR (physically based rendering — not the cheap beer) properties and adding new geometric details. The remake uses RTX IO for fast and smooth asset loading, seen recently in P... Continue reading… from The Verge - All Posts https://ift.tt/NUjidDz

Threads on the web is here

Image: The Verge Meta is finally launching a much more capable web app for Threads, the company announced on Tuesday. You’ll be able to post, interact with other posts, and look at your feed, spokesperson Christine Pai tells The Verge . It’s set to roll out over the next few days, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says . So far, Threads on the web has essentially been a glorified way to look at somebody’s profile — you couldn’t even like or reshare a post even though the web app included the buttons to do so. (If you clicked them, Threads would show you a QR code to download the mobile app.) The new desktop web interface looks a lot like the one in the mobile app, though with some small differences; the navigation icons are on the top of the page, and to switch...
