1Password is making it easier to find passwords based on your location

A new home tab option in 1Password provides faster access to saved passwords based on your location. | Image: 1Password 1Password introduced a new feature today that will make it easier to find the login, password, or access code you’re looking for, based on where you’re using the app. It will now let you add a specific physical location to items , and they’ll automatically appear in the new Nearby section of the app’s home tab, depending on how close you are to that spot. The password manager already makes it easy to quickly access frequently used or favorited passwords on the mobile app’s home tab without searching. But both of those sections can get cluttered if you have a long list of passwords you regularly access. The addition of location data will help ensure only the most relevant passwords are presented when opening the mobile app — like your health card at the doctor or travel documents at the airport — minimizing the need to scroll through a long list or remembering exac...

NASA is making sacrifices to keep the Voyager mission alive

It’s been 47 years since the twin Voyager spacecraft started their historic mission. Having travelled through interstellar space, farther from Earth than any other human-made objects, their nuclear batteries are depleting — but NASA is taking measures to squeeze as much life out of the aging probes as possible. The Voyagers’ radioisotope power system loses around 4 watts each year, so to preserve power, NASA engineers have been shutting down some of the science instruments carried by each probe. Voyager 1’s cosmic ray subsystem experiment was turned off on February 25th. When the low-energy charged particle instrument aboard Voyager 2 is shut down on March 24th, both spacecraft will have three out of the ten identical science instruments they launched with remaining operational. “Electrical power is running low,” said Voyager project manager, Suzanne Dodd. “If we don’t turn off an instrument on each Voyager now, they would probably have only a few more months of power before we wou...

DuckDuckGo is amping up its AI search tool — but will still let you leave it behind

DuckDuckGo has big plans for embedding AI into its search engine. The privacy-focused company just announced that its AI-generated answers, which appear for certain queries on its search engine, have exited beta and now source information from across the web — not just Wikipedia. It will soon integrate web search within its AI chatbot, which has also exited beta. DuckDuckGo first launched AI-assisted answers — originally called DuckAssist — in 2023. The feature is billed as a less obnoxious version of tools like Google’s AI Overviews , designed to offer more concise responses and let you adjust how often you see them, including turning the responses off entirely. If you have DuckDuckGo’s AI-generated answers set to “often,” you’ll still only see them around 20 percent of the time, though the company plans on increasing the frequency eventually. “We’d like to raise that over time,” Gabriel Weinberg, the CEO and founder of DuckDuckGo, told The Verge . “That’s another major area that...

Latest Turing Award winners again warn of AI dangers

Andrew Barto (left) and Richard Sutton (right) have won the 2024 Turing Award. | Image: Association for Computing Machinery Two trailblazing scientists who today received this year’s Turing Award for creating fundamental artificial intelligence training techniques are using the spotlight to shine concern on the dangers of rushing AI models out for public consumption.  University of Massachusetts researcher Andrew Barto and former DeepMind research scientist Richard Sutton warned that AI companies are not thoroughly testing products before releasing them, likening the development to “building a bridge and testing it by having people use it,” according to The Financial Times .  The Turing Award, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Computing,” carries a $1 million prize and was jointly awarded to Barto and Sutton for developing “reinforcement learning” — a machine learning method that trains AI systems to make optimized decisions through trial and error. Google’s senio...

Digg is coming back, thanks to its founder — and Reddit’s

The new Digg looks a lot more like 2025 than 2005. | Image: Digg Sometime last fall, Kevin Rose started thinking seriously about Digg again. A smidge over two decades ago, he’d launched a social and link sharing website that, for years, was known as “the homepage of the internet.” Since then, Digg had been through several owners and many pivots , Rose had gone on to several other careers, and the internet had moved on. Rose had thought about building something like Digg again, and had even been approached to buy back the domain and website a few times, but the timing had never been right. This time, though, things started to click. Rose and a group of what he calls “brainstorming partners,” which included Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, design and product exec Justin Mezzell, and even folks like Blogger and Twitter cofounder Ev Williams, started to talk about whether AI might be able to help them build a better social platform. “I would call Alexis up and we would chat,” Rose s...

Volvo’s ES90 is a high-riding electric sedan with 434 miles of range

No word on when the ES90 will make it to the US. | Image: Volvo Volvo has pulled back the curtain on its upcoming ES90 electric sedan with 434 miles of range and a tech stack that includes Nvidia’s powerful Drive AGX Orin computer in a dual setup. Volvo has been trickling news out about the ES90 over the past several weeks, but today’s announcement includes our first full look at the sedan and a full rundown on its specs, including an 800-volt architecture for fast charging and the aforementioned Nvidia system-on-a-chip. The ES90 boasts Volvo’s longest range, fastest charging speed, and most advanced computing system of all its vehicles. The sedan will arrive with 700km of range (434.9 miles) based on the generous WLTP standard. (The EPA rating is likely to be less.) The ES90 will come in three different variants. There’s the base model with a single motor mounted on the rear axle, with 245kW (329 horsepower) of power output and 354 lb-ft of torque. The dual-motor all-wheel dr...

The future of BMW is being built at a battery factory in Germany

BMW is developing its Gen6 batteries at a factory in Landshut. | Image: BMW While other automakers rethink their plans as the global appetite for EVs slows down , BMW is vowing to stay the course. The German automaker says it still plans to offer an EV in every vehicle segment across all of its brands, including Mini and Rolls-Royce. And most importantly, BMW is investing billions of dollars in new battery technology, including a new controller it calls the “Energy Master.†  As the political winds shift, BMW hopes doubling down on EV technology can allow it to take the lead from Tesla, fend off the coming tidal wave of Chinese EVs, and grow its market share.  Last March, BMW announced its Neue Klasse , the new all-electric architecture that will underpin its future EVs. As the company continues to trickle out details of the new technology , it invited a group of journalists to Munich last month to show off its newly developed battery cells, the Energy Master cont...

Waymo is now available exclusively on Uber in Austin

The vehicles will be co-branded with both companies’ logos. | Image: Uber Today’s the day: Waymo’s unlikely partnership with Uber is now live in Austin, Texas. The former rivals have joined forces in the hopes of accelerating the transition to autonomous vehicles, and as of today, any Austin resident with a desire to take a trip in a fully driverless robotaxi can open their Uber app and hail away.  But, of course, there are some limitations.  Waymo only operates within a 37-square-mile area in Austin, which includes Hyde Park, Downtown, Montopolis, and other “popular destinations,” according to the company. So the trip will need to originate and end within that service area in order to qualify for Waymo. It also doesn’t operate on highways yet, so the route will only comprise local streets.  Another thing to consider: simply calling an Uber in Waymo’s geofence doesn’t guarantee a robotaxi will show up. Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli declined to share the si...

Nothing’s Phone 3A and 3A Pro use AI to organize all your stuff

The Nothing Phone 3A (right) and 3A Pro (left) are just as bold as ever. The Nothing 3A phones were just announced with a new take on the company’s “ make tech more fun again ” ethos. These devices have improved hardware over the Phone 2A , updated cameras, and a new feature called the Essential Space to store and index your miscellaneous screenshots, voice memos, and photographs, all through a dedicated button. Starting at $379 for the 3A and $459 for the 3A Pro, they offer solid specs for their midrange prices — and a look at what Nothing has been working on for this AI-centric moment. The 3A and 3A Pro are mainly differentiated by their cameras, which you’ll notice just by glancing at the two devices. The 3A Pro’s prominent round camera housing includes a 3x periscope telephoto lens; the 3A offers a standard 2x zoom. Both phones include a 50-megapixel f/1.8 main camera and an 8-megapixel ultrawide. The telephoto cameras on each use a 50-megapixel sensor for lossless crop zoom: 4...

All the news about Netflix’s gaming efforts

Netflix is making a big push into video games. The company first dabbled in games with interactive titles like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch  and a  Carmen Sandiego game. But starting in 2021, it made gaming a much bigger priority — Netflix hired a former EA exec and let people play a selection of mobile games for free as part of their subscriptions. Since then, Netflix’s gaming arm has launched player gamertags and started hiring to develop a “AAA PC game” while bringing on big names like former Halo lead Joseph Staten . Ubisoft has even announced several games in development for Netflix, including an Assassin’s Creed title to go with a new live-action series the two companies are working on. Netflix also rolled out more big-name titles like Monument Valley and a Tomb Raider roguelike. Most Netflix subscribers haven’t tried its games yet , but that might change soon. In August 2023, it launched the first tests for its cloud-streamed games that let you play its titl...

Blue Ghost private lander reaches the Moon intact

This photograph snapped by Blue Ghost shows the Moon's surface and Earth on the horizon. The Blue Ghost spacecraft has landed on the moon, making history as the first private lander to “successfully” achieve this feat according to its creator, Firefly Aerospace. The Texas-based commercial aerospace firm announced on Sunday that its lander had “softly touched down on the Moon’s surface in an upright, stable configuration.” This is technically the second private spacecraft to land on the lunar surface. Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus lander, which touched down last February, was the first US spacecraft to land on the Moon since the 1972 Apollo 17 mission, but its mission was cut short after it toppled over. Having nailed its own landing, Blue Ghost will now spend a full lunar day (about two weeks) performing research operations, including “lunar subsurface drilling, sample collection, X-ray imaging, and dust mitigation experiments.” These experiments aim to provide environmental ...

Driverless racecar sets a new autonomous speed record

Look out: there’s a new fastest robot in the world. A Maserati MC20 Coupe with no one in the driver seat set a new land speed record for autonomous vehicles, reaching 197.7 mph (318 km/h) during an automotive event at the Kennedy Space Center last week. The Maserati was running self-driving software developed by Politecnico di Milano, Italy’s largest scientific-technological university. The team also worked with the Indy Autonomous Challenge, which most recently ran at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway during CES 2025 . 197.7 > 192.2 In the shadow of NASA’s iconic Space Shuttles, the race car flew down the 2.8 mile runway at record-breaking speeds, surpassing the 192.2 mph record that was also held by Indy Autonomous Challenge and PoliMOVE , set by an IAC AV-21 race car in April 2022. The achievement is noteworthy, and not just because an autonomous race car went faster than any other self-driving vehicle before it. It’s partly about stress-testing the reliability of the algori...

Xiaomi 15 Ultra review: ugly phone, beautiful camera

After two years telling anyone who’d listen that Chinese manufacturer Vivo made the best cameras in any smartphone, last year’s Xiaomi 14 Ultra changed my tune. It became my favorite phone and camera, handling everything from holiday snaps to product review photoshoots.  With the 15 Ultra, Xiaomi took the best and made it better with a new 200-megapixel periscope lens to complement the other (largely unchanged) cameras. The downside? The 14 Ultra was never much of a looker, and the 15 Ultra’s enormous, asymmetrical camera module has taken a bad design and made it worse. I’m willing to put up with the awkward aesthetic when the camera is this good, but I’d be pretty understanding if you went the other way. Camera I haven’t mentioned much about this phone’s specs yet beyond the camera. That’s intentional. Yes, this is a flagship phone through and through, but you can find most of what it offers on other phones for half the price. If you’re willing to drop £1...

Xiaomi brings its 15 and 15 Ultra flagships to Europe — but the US misses out

Just days after revealing the 15 Ultra in China , Xiaomi has announced a UK and European launch for its latest flagship phone, together with the base Xiaomi 15. There’s no sign of the Pro model, but there is an array of tablets, earbuds, and fitness trackers appearing alongside the phones. The 15 and 15 Ultra are available to order from today, starting at £1,299 / €1,499 (around $1,600) for the Ultra and £899 / €999 (around $1,100) for the 15. Both are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite and include big batteries, fast wired and wireless charging, and IP68 ratings. The cameras are really where the two phones diverge. While both phones feature similar sounding sets of 50-megapixel main, telephoto, and ultrawide cameras, the Ultra actually uses different sensors on every lens, so should net superior results. It also features a fourth lens: a 200-megapixel, 4.3x periscope lens that dominates the already large camera module on the phone’s back. Xiaomi is also selling a Photography Kit a...

Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro are the first to deliver on Qualcomm’s promise of Wi-Fi earbuds

Xiaomi has given a European launch to its Buds 5 Pro, the first earbuds to use Qualcomm’s S7 Pro chip to stream audio over Wi-Fi, in addition to Bluetooth, with no increase in power consumption. Qualcomm announced the technology in October 2023, and this is the first hardware to launch. The Buds 5 Pro were announced in China on Thursday, alongside the 15 Ultra phone , which is also launching in Europe. They come in two versions: a regular Bluetooth model, and a Wi-Fi version that uses Qualcomm’s Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) tech to deliver 96kHz/24bit lossless audio at a bandwidth of up to 4.2Mbps, superior to anything you can get over Bluetooth. You’ll also be able to walk away from your phone without the connection deteriorating, so long as you stay within the range of your Wi-Fi network. There are caveats. The obvious one is that you’ll need to be on Wi-Fi, so you’re only likely to get the benefits of better audio on your home network. When it announced XPAN in 2023, Qua...
